Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch and the figurehead of a vast empire. She oversaw vast changes in British society and gave her name to an age.

She succeeded her uncle, William IV, in 1837, at the age of 18, and her reign dominated the rest of the century. In 1840 she married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha.

Owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co RMS Douro was a  slender iron screw steamer was built in 1865 with a gross tonnage of 2.824 tons. The ship sunk on the 31 March 1882 while carrying a large amount of gold mostly in gold sovereigns. The ship was located and some of the cargo recovered.The coin shown here is one of these coins. This coin has been validated as an Authentic RMS Douro ship wreck sovereign by NGC
