Produced to commemorate the coronation of George VI, 5001 4 coin proof Sovereign sets were minted in 1937. The set comprised of the £5 Crown, double Sovereign, full Sovereign and half Sovereign. Over the years, many of these sets have been split up and the coins sold separately. Of all the four coins in the set, the Sovereign commands the highest price to gold content ratio.
The 1937 Sovereign set is unique in that the coins were minted with plain edge, rather than the usual milled edge seen on all other Sovereigns except the more recent 2017 Strike on the day sovereign.
